Makar Sankranti is celebrated with different names and customs in different cities across India. In the north-west, it is called Makar Sankranti. People in the east call it Pausha Sankranti.

In the south, it is referred to as Pongal and in the central and central-east part of India, it is also called Khichdi. Finally, in the state of Gujarat, it is called Uttarayan.

Despite the different names, Sankranti is synonymous with the Sun’s movement from South to North. According to the Vedic manuscripts, this day Sun visit it’s son, Shani. Also, it is celebrated to mark the beginning of a new harvest season.

On this day, people bath in the holy Ganga and seek forgiveness for their sins. Sesame Ladoos, Firni and Khir are offered to the gods to seek their blessings.

This is also a good day for deeds. People offer fruits, vegetables, sweets and clothes to the needy. It is believed that such a deed on this auspicious day gives tenfold benefits.

In the northern part of India, Sankranti or Uttarayan is celebrated with kites. The skies are taken over by colorful kites, ruthlessly competing against each other.
