What is a Zodiac?
The Zodiac is a belt-shaped area of the horizon. This area extends approximately 8° N or 8° S of the ecliptic. An ecliptic is the apparent path of the Sun on the celestial sphere when observed from Earth.
There are 12 zodiac signs. Each cover 30 degree of celestial longitude. Hence, a 360 degree belt with 12 30-degree divisions. Zodiacs were first categorized in 2500 BC. Texts by sages like Bhrigu and Agastya are key.
Vedic and Western Astrology
First, Vedic Astrology focuses more on the stars. Plus, the moon. It uses sidereal zodiac (Nirayana). Western Astrology is based more around the Sun. It uses tropical zodiac (Sayana).
Second, sub-systems of predictions are present in Vedic Astrology. These are not available in Western Astrology. Third, the concept of Lunar Mansions is absent in Western Astrology.
Finally, planetary system (Dasha) is used in Vedic Astrology. This is far more advanced than Western Astrology.
Western and Vedic Zodiac Signs
Zodiac Signs are measured differently. In the Vedic system, the stars are considered fixed while the movement of planets is measured.
In the Western system, the position of the Sun on the spring equinox is constant. Against this, the movement of planets is measured.
After 2000 years, the position of the ecliptic longitude has shifted. This is approximately 22 degrees. Also, by 2020, this is now 23 degrees.
This is because our Earth is not a perfect sphere. It is wider at the equator. Hence, it is not stable around its orbit.
Therefore, Vedic system of observing is more accurate. As a result, both the systems have different dates for each zodiac sign.
