What is Kamika Ekadashi?
Lord Krishna told the story of kamika ekadashi to saintly king Yudhisthira. Narad Muni also asked about this ekadashi to Lord Brahma.
Kamika Ekadashi is considered to be the best time for worshipping Lord Vishnu.
Sridhar form of Lord Vishnu will be worshipped on this day. This form is one with four hands holding lotus, mace, discus and conch.
One who will fast on this day and honor Lord Vishnu will get rid of sins and will attain lord Vishnu after death.
Offering Tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu on this day is considered highly favorable.
Also, people chant Vishnu Sahastra Naam Stotra early in the morning.
Furthermore, one this day, one must donate food and clothes to the brahmins or the needy. This is considered very auspicious.
The result obtained after fasting this Ekadashi is as equivalent as performing Ashwamedha Yagya (horse sacrifice ritual).
Om Sreedharaya Namah (ॐ श्रीधराय नमः॥) is the mantra to chant.
Kamika Ekadashi Story
Once there was a fierce landlord who got into a fight with a Brahmin and accidently killed him.
This brahmin was a pious devotee of Lord Vishnu.
The landlord wanted to repent by performing the last rights for the brahmin.
However, he was refused to do so by the villagers. Hence, the landlord was cursed with a brahmin’s killing.
The landlord then approached learned saints. He wanted to get rid of this curse.
The saints advised him to fast on Kamika Ekadashi. They also asked him to perform good deeds.
The landlord, with full devotion, fasted on kamika ekadashi. He also helped the poor.
Pleased with him, Lord Vishnu freed him from the sins of accidently killing a brahmin.
Such is the significance of observing kamika ekadashi fast.
