Devotees of Lord Shiva observe fast on this auspicious day and visit temple to perform puja; offering jal (water), milk and bilva leaves on shivalinga; before breaking the fast.

Pradosh Vrat Story

Once, the devatas (gods) were cursed by a sage named Durvasa, such that they lose all their strength. The asuras (demons) took this opportunity to beat devatas in battle and took control over trilok (three worlds or universe). In horror and dismay, the devatas went to brahma, vishnu and mahesg (shiva) to seek help.

Hearing their plight, the trinity ordered them to churn amrit (the elixir of immortality) from the bottom of the ocean. However, churning was not an easy task and required the help of asura armies. Devatas lured asuras to amrit and they agreed to help. Lord Vishu took the avatar of Kurma (giant turtoise) to support the churning stick on his back. Vasukhi, the giant cobra snake, acted as the churning rope.

The asuras held the head of the snake while the devatas held the tail in the opposite direction. Soon, deadly fumes and poison came out of the ocean; risking everyone’s lives in the universe. Lord Shiva was then approached & he offered his help. He drank and held the poison in his throat, which turned it his throat blue.

A lot of valuables emerged from the ocean which were distributed between devatas and asuras. Finally, Dhanvantari emerged from the ocean holding the pot of Amrit; which was distributed to the devatas; restoring their power over the asuras and glory in the swarga loka. Devatas then sang praises of Lord Shiva, who became very pleased and danced in ecstasy on Pradosh (twilight) of Trayodashi Tithi (13th day of the lunar month).

Those who observe the fast get blessed with good health, wealth, and worldly life comforts.
