Nirjala Ekadashi in 2024 falls on Tuesday, June 18th. The Ekadashi Tithi begins at 04:43 AM on June 17th and ends at 06:24 AM on June 18th, 2024. The Parana, which is the time to break the fast, is from 05:24 AM to 07:28 AM on June 19th, 2024.

Nirjala Ekadashi is considered one of the most important and rigorous Ekadashi fasts. It is believed that observing this fast brings the benefits of all 24 Ekadashis observed throughout the year. Devotees who observe this fast are said to gain freedom from all past and present sins, attain good health, wealth, success, and ultimately, the blessings of Lord Vishnu. It is also believed to lead to Vaikunta, the abode of Lord Vishnu, after death.

Rituals and Practices on Nirjala Ekadashi

  1. Fasting: Devotees follow a strict fast, refraining from eating and drinking for 24 hours. Only a few drops of water are taken during the Aachaman ritual.

  2. Worship: The day is spent in devotion, with activities like singing bhajans, performing kirtans, and reading or listening to the Ekadashi Vrat Katha.

  3. Parana: The fast is broken the next day, on Dwadashi Tithi, after the end of Hari Vasara, typically between sunrise and noon.

  4. Avoiding Sleep: It is recommended to stay awake all night, dedicating time to chanting Vishnu mantras and participating in devotional activities.

  5. Additional Recommendations:

    • Vishnu Sahasranama: Reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama (a list of a thousand names of Lord Vishnu) is considered highly auspicious.

    • Bhagavad Gita: Reading passages from the Bhagavad Gita is also recommended.

    • Donation: Giving donations and feeding the poor is an integral part of the observance. It is believed that such acts of charity bring immense merit.

    • Offering to Brahmins: Offering food, clothes, and other essentials to Brahmins is a common practice.

Dietary Restrictions on Nirjala Ekadashi

During the fast, grains, beans, and certain vegetables such as tomatoes, eggplants, cauliflower, broccoli, and bell peppers should be avoided. After the fast, a mixture of milk, curd, honey, and ghee is considered pure and suitable for consumption.
